So, me and Blue. Blue is an 8 year old 17.3 (and a bit!) British bred Warmblood, I’ve had him since he was 4 and he’s now 8. He originally came to me on loan as a dressage horse as he has a soft palate abnormality which meant we were unsure how he would cope with ridden work especially fast work which is why we focused on dressage initially starting when he was 6. We’ve clocked up many successes all the way from prelim through to now competing at medium, including top 10 placings at all regional championships, multiple team selections and placings and this year we are aiming for Area Festival at medium and selection for the Senior Home International team competition at elementary or medium level.
For me the need to focus on rider strength and fitness came from a couple of things, I have never done dressage any higher than elementary level before and I was really beginning to struggle with the strength and coordination needed to ride at that level, coupled with having a giant horse who is the best part 18hh. I was also finding that I never wanted to buy any photos after competitions because I didn’t like the way I looked so there was a definite drive to change this.
As well as my dressage goals I am now focusing a bit more on jumping and am considering aiming for an event towards the end of the season. It will only be an 80cm and just for fun but I know I will need to focus on my fitness to be able to get round the XC without rolling off due to exhaustion!
Gemma will be bringing you monthly blogs to show you her way around a busy working life, competition schedule, transitioning towards jumping and how she keeps her Gin intake in check 😛
